Bastrop County employees working in the historic jailhouse have evacuated the building due to asbestos concerns, a county official said. County Judge Paul Pape is scheduled for a meeting to gather more information at 3 p.m., and plans to address media on the north entrance to the historic courthouse at 4:30 p.m. to give a statement.
Information about possible asbestos in the building started spreading among county employees Tuesday.
The jailhouse, located at 801 Pine St. next to the county courthouse, was built in 1891 and served as a jail until 1974. Today it is mainly used for the assembly of grand juries and county administration.
This is a developing tale; check back for details.
